Transmissions are becoming the manager of powertrains
At the start of the 13th CTI Symposium in Berlin, Professor Ferit Küҫükay said the German auto industry would be launching around 30 new cars with electrified drives in 2014 and 2015 alone. Electrification was stiffening the competition among drive concepts, and enabled engine and transmission concepts to be combined in more and more different ways. As a result, drives would remain a very exciting field for engineers. While Berlin showed the growing importance of integrative, holistic development approaches, it was important to be more open for new approaches too. The fate of internal combustion engines was by no means sealed, but in future they would be accompanied more frequently by an electric motor, right up to integration in active transmissions.
The Winners of the 6th CTI Young Drive Experts Award
Berlin/Düsseldorf, 10 December 2014. On December 10, the CTI Young Drive Experts Award ceremony was held for the sixth time at the 13th International CTI Symposium for Automotive Transmissions, HEV and EV Drives. The winners were Dr. Felix Töpler and Dr. Sebastian Idler. The honorary speech was held by Prof. Dr. Ferit Küçükay of TU Braunschweig, who is a jury member and the chair of the Berlin Transmission Symposium.

Düsseldorf/Suzhou, July 2014 – China is the world’s largest auto market, and will grow another ten percent this year. That spells numerous opportunities for carmakers and suppliers, but also means they need to plan carefully how they use resources. One of the Chinese government’s strategic goals is to develop more environment-friendly mobility concepts and grow electric mobility in the country. At the beginning of July, the cabinet of Minister President Li Keqiang therefore exempted more environment-friendly cars from VAT. The tax break applies to electric cars with batteries and fuel cells, as well as to hybrid vehicles, and will stay in force until the end of 2017. Vehicle drives and transmissions influence energy consumption considerably, and are thus a key focus topic in car development.

Together toward 54.5 mpg
In 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that by 2025, fleet consumption in the U.S. is to be reduced to 54.5 mpg. This equals a consumption level of 4.31 liters per 100 kilometers. The contribution that transmission technology can make to this target was discussed at the 8th International CTI Symposium on May 14 and 15, 2014 in Rochester. One of the issues under debate was the expectations of American drivers and changes in social parameters, which might require new approaches. This year saw only few proponents of the pure electric car; better chances were attributed to mild hybrids as well as, in the long run, plug-in hybrids for urban scenarios. While diesel engines for cars were no major issue, gasoline engines were still seen as offering major savings potential. As for transmission development, there was agreement despite differences in approaches. The requirements concerning efficiency and flexibility of the transmissions will continue to increase, but this must not happen at the expense of comfort.
