CO2 limits – how do automotive transmissions contribute?
International CTI Symposium Innovative Automotive Transmissions,
3rd to 7th December 2007, Maritim Hotel Berlin
The development of transmissions proceeds: the automotive supplier ZF, who presented the new generation of 8-speed transmissions at the International Motor Show (Internationale Automobilausstellung, IAA), thinks that complying with future carbon-dioxide limits is important: “When developing the 8-speed transmission, we did not focus on the number of gears, but on increased fuel economy,” emphasized Dr. Gerhard Wagner, member of the management, on the occasion of the International CTI Symposium “Innovative Automotive Transmissions” (3rd to 7th December, Maritim Hotel Berlin). Dr. Michael Paul, member of the board at ZF Friedrichshafen, will explain at the symposium how suppliers can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions of vehicles with their developments. As opposed to the ZF 6-speed transmission, which entered mass production in 2006, the 8-speed transmission allows a fuel-consumption reduction by six percent. “The 8-speed transmission is a totally new transmission concept,” says Wagner. Since there are only two open shift elements for each gear, drag losses are reduced significantly. “The efficiency of the transmission as well as the overall ratio is therefore increased. Additionally, modern torsional damping systems in torque converters influence fuel consumption and CO2 emission positively.”
